The idea is simple: these venues have international renown and commercial objectives to help maintain themselves as premier venues. The North East has bucket loads of creative talent selling goods and services through their businesses. They too have commercial objectives – in this case, to find new opportunities to market their work and grow. So, it’s about connecting suppliers to buyers.
Although the idea is simple we all know that with the best will in the world, in practise things are not always so simple. Making it simple is our task at Durham Creatives. The starting point is a clear market opportunity which will meet the commercial and creative needs of both buyers and suppliers: that is, to draw inspiration from the region’s iconic buildings to design products for sale in Sage Gateshead and BALTIC shops.
We think this is a fantastic challenge which should tickle the imaginations of any maker: a beautifully clear brief but one which demands real originality.
You’ll get to meet the buyers to talk in more detail about what they’re looking for and tap into their wider commercial expertise.You’ll also meet your fellow participants (which will immediately open up possible collaborations for those of you who prefer to work that way).
What we have planned…
We’ll co-ordinate a programme over three (non-consecutive) days which will cover practical and theoretical matters that will help you get the most from the opportunity and set you on a path to growth. After all if you can sell to arts venues in Gateshead, then why not London, Hong Kong, Sydney…
The workshop programme will be flexible and shaped to your needs as creative businesses excited by the prospect of growth but we will certainly explore themes such as;
- Ideas generation
- Market segment
- Protecting creativity
- Support in identifying manufacturers
- Costing and pricing your work
- Negotiating a contract
- Access to finance
Apart from the opportunity to sell work, you’ll take away the permanent benefits that extending your networks and raising your profile will bring.
