The car club model allows members to pick up a car from dedicated on-street bays when needed, for periods of 30mins up to several days at a time. The cars can booked online and accessed with a smartcard, allowing key-free access to cars 24/7. Hire rates are charged on a per-hour basis, enabling huge savings to be made on the cost of driving, compared to car ownership.
The existing scheme in Newcastle, Gateshead, Hexham and Durham has been given a boost by a successful bid by the North East Combines Authority (NECA), Nexus, and Co-wheels to expand the car club across the region.
20 new cars, including eight fully electric, have been added to the fleet, with car club hire now available in new locations across Newcastle, Gateshead and Durham as well as launching across North Tyneside, Sunderland, and in the centre of Morpeth.

All Co-wheels hire cars are low emission, hybrid, or electric, helping to lower emissions and improve air quality in towns and cities, as well as adding social value by providing access to cars for those unable to afford their own.
Co-wheels has seen huge expansion and success across the country, successfully competing with multinational car hire operators on price and service. The car club, which operates as a Community Interest Company, has just published its inaugural Social and Environmental Impact Report, available at www.co-wheels.org.uk/about_us
