Sporty People was founded in 2010 as a charitable association aiming to provide a range of sports opportunities for local clubs, schools, and residents in South Tyneside, Sunderland and Co. Durham. A feasibility study was undertaken to determine whether Sporty People should progress into a sports activity Community Interest Company.
Growing Community Sport:
Sporty People are a team of dedicated community coaches especially experienced in using sporting activity to engage non-sporty or semi-sporty young people. These may include low achievers in schools, young carers, care leavers and young unemployed. Becoming involved in our programmes opens up participant pathways to education, training and employment through volunteering, leadership qualifications and accreditation. Sporty People are currently working on introducing apprenticeships for young people with a view eventually to offering achievers a Sporty People ‘franchise’. So participants benefit with improved life-skills and opportunities and communities benefit from young people having something to do that they enjoy and is worthwhile.
Sporty People may also be the only organisation in the country to provide a repair and recycling service to schools and clubs. We spotted the need for a low-cost repair service of sports equipment such as table-tennis tables, making sure the repairs restored them to their nearly new condition. We also repaired and recycled table-tennis tables for clubs and schools.
